SimaPro course to be held in October

We are arranging a course in LCA and Simapro in Oslo, to be held October 15-17. Register and learn how to use the world's best and most used software for life cycle assessment.

Course Structure

A focus is placed on the use of case studies and open discussion, and participants will actively use SimaPro throughout the course. Although the course follows the ISO 14040 and 14044 standards, other LCA methodological guidelines will also be discussed.

The course is split into two mini-courses. The language of instruction is Norwegian. The first part is a half-day foundations course in life cycle assessment. The second is a two-day course on the use of SimaPro.

Participants may opt to take only Part 1 or Part 2, or to take the course in its entirety. The price scheme is available below and include course materials, lunch for all course days and a participant dinner on the Tuesday. These prices assume a minimum of 5 participants. Travel and accomodations are not included in these prices, and must be arranged by the participants.

A SimaPro license is not necessary to participate in the course; a temporary course license will be distributed. We recommend that all participants review example SimaPro exercises prior to attending the course. The exercises may be found atwww.pre.nl/download/manuals/SimaPro7Tutorial.pdf.

Opportunities for discussions of specific challenges will be available on both course days. If there is a particular issue or topic that you wish to discuss or have covered, please advise thecourse instructor ahead of time or during the course.

Part 1: Introduction to LCA

The goal for Day 1 is to give a general introduction to LCA. This is a good start for beginners as well as a good refresher course for more advanced participants.

• Important terms
• Open Leontief model
• Goal and scope
• Product function, functional unit, and comparisons using LCA
• Selection fo allocation methods
• Inventory modelling
• Environmental impact assessment
• Interpretation of results
• Uncertainty analysis
• Consequential LCA vs attributional LCA
• Combined process-LCA and IOA – Hybrid LCA
• Other market effects
• LCA case study: Biogas Trondheim
• Typical challenges in LCA

Part 2: SimaPro (2 days)

At the end of Part 2, course participants should be able to develop their own life cycle inventory and product life cycle, as well as investigate the robustness of their findings and identify differences between various products.

Topics covered in Part 2 include:

• Available databases in SimaPro
• Introduction to various environmental life-cycle impact methods, including Eco-indicator 99, CML baseline, ReCiPe, EDIP, and EPS2000.
• Sensitivity analyses and scenario evaluation
• Weighting and use of different consequence methods in result interpretation

Requests for assistance with specific projects

It is possible to arrange for private consulting sessions on the Thursday or Friday following the course (October 18-19) for those who wish to go through and discuss challenges specific to their projects. We can contribute as discussion partners or review ongoing LCA work.

Other relevant topics can be choice of modelling and inventory calculations, development of scenarios with marginal (consequential) or average (attributional) LCA analyses, advanced use of SimaPro, use of LCA in accordance to various standards for environmental labelling and environmental product declaration (EPD, carbon footprinting), lifecycle based environmental and climate assessments for industries or other challenges related to LCA or SimaPro.
